U.S. Air Force Gen. Ken Wilsbach, Pacific Air Forces Commander Royal Australian Air Force Air Marshal Rob Chipman, Chief of the RAAF, and German Air Force General Ingo Gerhartz, Chief Air Officer of the German Air Force, flew fighter jets over Australia’s Northern Territory on September 5, in a show of friendship and cooperative leadership.

Wilsbach stole a F-22 RaptorsGerhartz a Eurofighter and Chipman an RAAF EA-18G Growler as part of a dynamic force employment demonstration designed to increase the lethality of forces in contested environments and improve interoperability between members of joint, allied and partner nations.

“When we talk about interoperability, it’s not just about platforms and systems, but also about the interoperability of our Airmen,” Wilsbach said. “We’re talking about building trust with our allies and partners.”

The desire to build on core multilateral capabilities is paramount to international cooperation in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. Leaders often set an example for the development of international relations.

“I take pride in being a fighter pilot and leading my forces from the front,” Gerhartz said. “Flying alongside America and our other allies makes me even more confident in our interoperability.”

Air chiefs discussed allies and partners as an asymmetric advantage when it comes to long-term competition with adversaries seeking to undermine shared values and international standards. Through frequent exercises, leadership exchanges and other international engagements, PACAF builds global relationships to build trust around the world.

“This is just one small demonstration of many we do daily to show that our Airmen are dedicated, trained and ready to provide air power to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Wilsbach explained. “Adversaries who seek to disrupt security and stability in this region, be warned – you will face a combined global network of allies and partners who have trained together for decades to operate seamlessly against you.”
