The nonprofit National Book Foundation annually awards the best new books published by an American publisher.
The judges, nominated by past winners, finalists and other judges, spend the summer reading hundreds of submissions (around 150 for the poetry) before announcing the top 10 titles in each category (longlists) in September and the top five (shortlists) in October.
When the winner is announced on November 17th, it’s news for everyone; no one knows who he will be until the judges decide the very day he is announced. (The Booker Prize follows a similar timeline).
Winners receive $ 10,000 and finalists receive $ 1,000. Both can expect an increase in prestige and book sales. Past laureates include beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning poets Mary Oliver and Frank Bidart.
Below you will find the 10 books that made the long list for the 2021 National Book Prize in Poetry. This year’s long list includes works from past Pulitzer Prize winners and emerging talent.
