Renovation works will transform Panorama Park
COLORADO SPRINGS – Progress is advancing in leaps and bounds in Panorama Park in southeast Colorado Springs.
The park is undergoing $ 8.5 million renovations that began in May.
“I think it’s pretty cool that we have some renovations going on here. I’ve lived here for a while and seeing the park finally being updated is awesome,” said Jalen Johnson.
Johnson says the park needed major upgrades.
“It really needed some work. There was a lot of dead grass and we had a baseball field here which was pretty nice. There was a nice little place in the shade but the park was pretty vandalized and this wasn’t too attractive, ”Johnson said.
He looks forward to renovations and the installation of some of the new features.
“Over here I saw a little climbing route with a slide, right next to the observation, it looks like it’s nice. Having something fresh will be nice,” Johnson said.
The city says they are halfway through the construction process.
“We’ve re-gratified the whole site, which is a big change. It was a really flat site, and now when you see the park you’ll see some extreme typography changes. Climbing hill that will allow us to see the whole of Panorama Park. The summit, the views and the stormwater ponds that serve as bike paths and routes, ”said Connie Schmeisser, landscape architect for the city of Colorado Springs.
The city recently installed two basketball courts, a fitness zone, and an 11-foot-tall climbing boulder designed by local youth and made in Gunnison, Colo. The boulder was donated by “The North Face” and is a one of a kind natural looking structure.
“The boulder has carved routes into the boulder so that you can try different difficult routes after you try easier routes and you work your way to make increasingly difficult routes on the boulder. It also creates seats on the rock. the top so you can just watch and hang out with your friends. It also allows people who may be in a wheelchair to do some wraps. We have different ways for them to curl up and grab onto the rock Schmeisser said.
The new Panorama Park will also have a paddling pool that will help conserve water.
“We definitely thought about conserving water in this park. We thought about it starting with the imprint of the irrigation plan, and everything we’ve done since has incorporated some level of conversation about it. water, ”said Schmeisser. “The splash basin has a large tank that goes into the ground and all that water is recycled.”
Schmeisser says the community’s involvement in the park has set the tone for its future and care will be devoted to it.
“There will always be vandalism and people wanting to put their art on different properties, but as long as we make an appearance and do our part to clean up, and be careful with the park that we have now is the best we can do. Johnson said.
The park is expected to reopen early next summer.
