JD Gaming reveals new branding for team logo
Since JD Gaming’s inception in 2017, fans have grown accustomed to seeing the team’s mischievous demon as its logo. Before the start of 2021 League of Legends Summer Split, however, we’ll see a newly designed icon move forward for the organization.
JDG are the latest team to reveal a new branding for this year, following in the footsteps of teams such as the LPL FunPlus Phoenix team and LEC Spring Split finalist Rogue. But the team has taken huge steps to modernize its look.
In a video today, the team hinted at inspiration for the new design, showing off the old demon face alongside the head of a classic. Gundam mechabot. The shape plays on both of these shapes, as the new wordmark style logo prevents the mech and demon horns, but also leans more into the robotic pattern. The devil’s face was also removed, signaling another team to remove their mascot from their logo.
FunPlus Phoenix showed off its new, streamlined wordmark ahead of the start of the Spring 2021 Division, where the organization opted to remove the iconic phoenix from its logo. Instead, the mythical bird and its flames have both been incorporated into the typography.
Fan reaction to the redesign was split between those who loved it and those who wanted to reclaim the old demon logo. There are only a few teams left in the LPL that have their mascot included in their logo, like the lion from Suning Gaming and the dragon from LNG Esports. It will be interesting to see if these teams take the same path if they decide to rename themselves in the future.
