Fulton Market, the Mid, announces its imminent closure
Fulton Market nightclub, the Mid, will close its doors for good in February 2019. Nightlife entrepreneurs Lucas King and Nick Karounos opened the club in 2010, and according to a press release, they are closing it due to the rapid development of the club. district. I imagine there are other complications, though: The Mid opened during the EDM boom and responded to its exploding fan base as it became dominant in the dance music world. . EDM poster Skrillex performed their first show in Chicago at the Mid.
The EDM hasn’t really gone bankrupt, but in the last few years it’s clear that the boom is over, especially since super-promoter SFX declared bankruptcy in February 2016. The Mid has done a great job putting in value the breadth of dance music, and I was always happy to see him book renowned venues such as Derrick Carter, Kaskade, Green Velvet and the Hot Mix 5. But it wasn’t the only nightlife spot in the city, and when Concord Music Hall opened in Logan Square in 2013, it draws on the same talent pool and often the same audience as the Mid. (King and Karounos are also co-owners of Concord.) Add to that the economic and cultural changes in Fulton Market, which have further diluted Mid’s ability to draw a crowd – nearby boutique bars and hotels are hosting free events. with DJs, for example. , and House of Vans hosts free shows with national rap stars.
King and Karounos were already part of Chicago’s music and nightlife scene before Mid’s opening. King co-founded React Presents and, in addition to Concord, they are co-owners of Prysm. Their press release suggests that they will continue to open theaters, and given their track record, I have no doubts. The question seems to be less “if” than “where”. Here is their official statement:
Unfortunately, the time has come to close the doors of MID on February 5, 2019. These last few months will be a celebration of the past and a toast to the future. We would like to thank all the fans, artists, employees, agents, managers and promoters who have supported us throughout this era. As a thank you, we are having some very special events leading up to this “One Last Song”. It has been an incredible race to say the least, but now is the time to turn the page as we raise our glasses to what will be the end of an era and the start of our next chapter.
