No more free calls on the internet?
TRAI’s original recommendation was returned in 2008. In this regard, it was said that internet service providers could be allowed to provide internet calls over the telephone network. However, an interconnection fee will be charged for this. Additionally, valid interception equipment must be installed and multiple security agencies must be adhered to. This question came up again in 2016-2017 when the issue of net neutrality made headlines. However, the DoT is now reviewing the proposal.
Know that telecom operators have long called for a uniform law for all calling and messaging services on the Internet. The report also indicates that the royalty must also be paid in equal parts. Moreover, the quality of service should also be the same. If this happens, calls made from other apps including Google Duo, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Telegram will also be charged to users. It remains to be seen how these rates and service charges will be implemented or how much will be charged.
