Fantasy Injury Updates: Cam Newton, Jimmy Garoppolo, More Impact on Week 5 Starting Decisions
The quarterback is the easiest position to replace in fantasy football, but losing a top passer can throw a wrench in fantasy owners’ plans. Cam Newton’s positive COVID diagnosis last week has prompted Newton’s owners to fight for replacements for the post, and many will be focusing on finding banners again this week. Injuries to Drew Lock and Jimmy Garoppolo have also caused problems for fancy owners, although these are more aimed at owners of Broncos and 49ers receivers. Either way, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the health of the three QBs this week, as they will have a big impact on startup and sit-em decisions for fantasy owners.

Does Cam Newton play week 5?
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL NetworkNewton is unlikely to play for the Patriots against Denver after testing positive for coronavirus last week. This is not a major surprise, as Newton, who is asymptomatic, would have to test negative twice in a row separated by more than 24 hours to make the return. The Patriots are goodbye to week 6 anyway, so if they sit in Newton the extra week it gives him more time to be healthy and would help mitigate the risk of potential COVID exposure for the Patriots. team.
It’s unclear who will start in Newton’s place, but Brian Hoyer got the nod last week. He struggled with turnovers and key bags before handing late snaps to Jarrett Stidham, who also struggled to return the ball. Neither would be a recommended fantasy play, and Newton’s absence would likely be more positive for running play (extra carries) than passing play (drop to the ceiling for Julian Edelman, N ‘ Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd). If Newton is indeed released, Denver’s D / ST becomes an interesting streaming option.
Is Jimmy Garoppolo playing in week 5?
UPDATE 2: Garoppolo has been officially announced as the 49ers starter for week 5.
UPDATE: Garoppolo practiced and would have been “move well“Thursday.
Garoppolo (ankle) missed the 49ers last two games after coming out at halftime of their Week 2 win over the Jets with a sprained ankle. Now it looks like he’ll have a chance to see the pitch in Week 5 against the Dolphins.
According to team injury report, Garoppolo recorded a limited session on Wednesday. This is a sign that he will at least have a chance to play in week 5 if he can continue at that level of production. And if he can upgrade to full participation on Thursday or Friday, that will be even better for his chances.
If Garoppolo plays, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle should all get stocks as they will be able to make more downline plays against a Dolphins defense that has allowed 31 points twice in four games this season. If Garoppolo is absent, they will all get a slight downgrade, whether it’s Nick Mullens or CJ Beathard who starts for San Francisco.
Drew Lock Injury Update
According to ABC Denver, Lock (shoulder) resumed training for the Broncos on Wednesday. The team’s young quarterback was limited to individual drills, but it’s still a good sign Lock could be available for Week 5 after being seen as a “50-50 hit” earlier in the week.
Lock’s return will give his top receivers Jerry Jeudy and Tim Patrick a boost given his strong arm and ability to bring the ball down. However, Lock himself is still not a recommended start until we can see how well he throws. He also faces a tough clash with the Patriots, although the Pats lack CB Stephon Gilmore after testing positive for COVID. Still, Lock only deserves a potential starting consideration in the two-QB and Superflex leagues.
