Cosmo Theater slowly rises after pandemic hiccups
MERRILL, Wisconsin (WSAW) – The Cosmo Theater in Merrill has experienced a roller coaster of business impacts due to the pandemic. Like many, they are hoping to bounce back as we slowly return to normal.
Many movies are shown on streaming services the same day theaters receive them, but the Cosmo Theater said things are slowly starting to change.
“Well it’s getting better, we reopened in September and it was really slow,” said owner Trevor Dzwonkowski. “It has been difficult for us, the staff is extremely limited, we have kept the majority of our staff, but with limited hours. “
Dzwonkowski believes people took to new home movie streaming habits while the lockdowns were in effect.
“Some movies you just need to see on the big screen,” Dzwonkowski said.
Now that theaters are open again, there are still more films to be released on both platforms.
“Obviously it’s good for the studios to be able to earn that money and keep going, but for the theater it was really, really hard for us,” said Dzwonkowski.
A few months ago, the Cosmo saw things improve, with the release of blockbuster movies, but then saw a lull.
Now, they’re slowly going up as more and more blockbuster movies hit the big screen.
“Finally, there are movies coming out that aren’t streaming, so it helps us a lot, so people aren’t sitting at home watching it, they are coming to the movies and watching it,” Dzwonkowski said.
As people become more comfortable going to the movies, Dzwonkowski said they were lucky to have 25 people in a theater, which would have been a bad night before the pandemic.
“Everything is better than it was, so everything helps,” Dzwonkowski said.
He expects to see even more people returning to theaters during the summer as more and more blockbuster movies come out.
